Smokey Bear (often unofficially referred to as Smokey the Bear) is the national symbol for preventing human-caused wildfires. Smokey Bear was created in 1944 with the appeal that "Care will prevent 9 out of 10 forest fires" and is managed by the US Forest Service. Smokey's famous slogan "Only you can prevent forest fires" started in 1947.
The living symbol of Smokey Bear was an American black bear who in the spring of 1950 was caught in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico. The cub was in the Lincoln National Forest. Smokey had climbed a tree to escape the blaze, but his paws and hind legs had been burned.
The name and character of Smokey Bear are the property of the United States, as provided by 16 U.S.C. 580p-1 and 18 U.S.C. 711, and are used with the permission of the Forest Service, US Department of Agriculture
